1. Indian Army Appoints New Commanders for Southern, Eastern, and Western Commands
   On April 1, 2026, the Indian Army appointed new commanders for its three major commands—the
   Southern, Eastern, and Western Commands—a move regarded as a significant step toward strengthening the Army’s operational readiness and technical integration. The responsibility of the Southern Command was entrusted to Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, who
   succeeded Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth.
2. Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth Appointed as New Vice Chief of Army Staff
   Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has assumed the office of the Vice Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army, signaling a high-level leadership transition and strategic consolidation within the force. Commissioned from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, in December 1986, Seth belongs to the Armoured Corps and possesses nearly 40 years of extensive military experience.
3. UPI Transactions Hit Record High of ₹29.53 Lakh Crore in March
   Transactions conducted through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in March 2026 set a new record, reflecting the rapid momentum of India’s digital economy and the growing confidence of the public. During this period, the total transaction value reached ₹29.53 lakh crore, while the total transaction volume stood at 22.64 billion—an alltime high.
4. Delhi Government Launches ‘Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’
   The Delhi Government has launched the ‘Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’ (Lakhpati Daughter Scheme), which replaces the previous ‘Ladli Yojana’ and is designed to promote the education, financial security, and empowerment of girl children. Under this scheme, financial assistance will be provided to girls in a phased manner—from birth through to higher education—enabling them to pursue their studies without facing financial barriers.
   
5. Ashwini Bhide Becomes First Female BMC Commissioner
   Ashwini Bhide has been appointed as the first female Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), an announcement made on March 31 She will succeed Bhushan Gagrani, and this appointment is being hailed as a significant milestone in urban administration. Ashwini Bhide is a senior IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, known for her exceptional administrative skills and the efficient management of infrastructure projects.
6. NASA’s Historic Step: Launch of a Human Lunar Mission After 50 Years
   NASA has sent four astronauts on a journey around the Moon as part of the Artemis II mission, marking humanity’s return to the lunar vicinity after a hiatus of approximately 54 years. This 10-day manned mission aims to pave the way for a future sustainable human presence on the Moon. The mission crew comprises Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen.
7. Snake Identification App Launched: Costa Rica’s Unique Technological Initiative
   Costa Rica has launched the ICP mobile app to aid in the identification of venomous snakes; the app was developed by the Clodomiro Picado Institute. The primary objective of this app is to ensure both human safety and wildlife conservation. This digital tool assists users in identifying 25 different species of venomous snakes and also provides comparative information regarding non-venomous species.
8. International Day of Mine Awareness
   The International Day of Mine Awareness is observed annually on April 4th, with the aim of raising awareness regarding the dangers posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war. This day was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005. Landmines are explosive devices typically buried beneath the ground that detonate upon contact with a person or a vehicle.
